TURNING OLD GOODS BACK INTO NEW CLOTHING
Art has the perfect solution to the problem of ‘what would happen’ to the old towels, bedding items, curtains that are no longer being used. Jörn Fröchlich, Lecturer, Department of Fashion and Textile Design, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), created new costumes from old materials such as curtains, towels, table clothes, etc.
Fröchlich stated that he did a spring-cleaning ever year, and that many items, which were no longer used, kept piling up. Fröchlich said, “We accumulate so much stuff. I do a spring-cleaning every year. We do not know what to do with the items we no longer use or need. I wanted to make a point about recycling and show that we can create new and stylish products out of waste materials.”
Fröchlich said that Cansu İncesu, Graduate of IUE Department of Fashion and Textile Design, assisted him in designing over 20 new clothes, which would be displayed at the Spring Fashion Show that will take place on March 23 at Park Myvia. Fröchlich indicated that this year’s fashion trend was comfortable clothes as opposed to tight fitting clothing. “Today, people go for more comfortable clothes. I do not throw away any items in my spring-cleaning. I reuse, reshape them. I turn them into pieces that are more comfortable. The concept of sustainability should be a major part of our lives. An old pillow case may turn into a very elegant blouse now,” said Fröchlich.
