A ‘DIFFERENT’ TOUCH TO MARBLE
Aspiring young designers created designs with marble. Orçun Umut Kumova, a senior at Department of Industrial Design, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), designed a radiator core by combining marble and copper. Kumova’s “Calient” titled design received the "Marble Most Different Design Award" at the Marble Different Design contest organized by the Young Creative Ideas Platform within the Marble Izmir 2018-24th International Natural Stone and Technology Fair.
Moreover, 7 out of 21 design awards went to Nimet Dilaver, Aylin Ertürk, Başak Yunatçı, Samed Tümer, and İsmail Güneş Ötken, all of whom are graduates of IUE Department of Industrial Design, at the same contest.
Orçun Umut Kumova gave information about his design, and he said he focused on physical properties and uses of marble. “I considered the less common uses of marble and marble products. Marble is commonly used for surfaces. I wanted to turn that into a plus value. I realized that marble was suitable for heat transmission; however, it was not being used for that purpose. Therefore, I designed a radiator core I called Calient. Calient is a radiator core where marble and copper are used together. I also insulated the inner part of the radiator because of water permeability issue of the marble. I aimed for a healthier dissemination of heat,” said Kumova.
