URLA WILL GET A MAKE OVER BY IZMIR UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMICS
The development of “Street and Facade Improvement Projects”, at 3 different location as part of the collaboration protocol between Urla Municipality and Izmir University of Economics (IUE) has been completed. 40 IUE graduate students and students from Department of Architecture presented their work to Urla Mayor Sibel Uyar in 8 groups.
Mayor Sibel Uyar, Vice Mayor Ziya Çamsarılıoğlu, Prof. Dr. Ender Bulgun, Dean of IUE Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Assoc. Prof. Ceylan Öner, Head of Department of Architecture, and Lecturer Architect Duygu Aksoy attended a meeting. Cumhuriyet Square surroundings, Bülent Baratalı Boulevard, and Historical Malgaca Bazaar and surrounding area, and some projects for the immediate suburbs have been discussed at the meeting.
The development of “Street and Facade Improvement Projects”, which is integrated with Historical Malgaca Bazaar and surrounding area, the first of these projects, has been completed. 40 students from IUE Department of Architecture presented the work they completed under the guidance of Lecturer Duygu Aksoy, to Urla Mayor Sibel Uyar in 8 groups. IUE students’ projects addressed how to restore the visually unpleasing aspects such as the signboards, facades, etc. with samples.
The second project is the Archeology and Excavation Site project, which focuses on the design of Ancient City of Klazomenai at Urla Port. Twenty-seven fourth year students work on this project as part of their Graduation Projects. The coordinators of this project are Lecturers Işık Ülkün Neusser, Ayşe Aydoğan, and Metin Şahin. Students will present their projects to Urla Municipality at the Graduation Projects Exhibition of Faculty of Fine Arts and Science that will take place on June 4 where they will be exhibited to the audience.
The third project is a project designed to improve the facade around Cumhuriyet Square and Bülent Baratalı Boulevard based on aesthetical and urban design components. A team of 8 instructors from Departments of Architecture, Industrial Design, and Visual Communication Design, as well as graduate students work in this interdisciplinary project. The outcomes of this project will be presented to Urla Municipality in the beginning of summer months.
Adding value to the city
Urla Mayor Sibel Uyar extended her thanks to IUE students and academics involved in the project. Uyar stated that the Historical Arditi Mansion, known as the Off-License Building (Tekel Binası), and the Historical Hersekzade Turkish Bath, which will be turned into a Soap Museum, would be open for visitors. Uyar said, “These projects will help us improve the streets and roads in Urla. These aesthetically improvements will add more value to Urla and to the buildings as well”.
