HIGH SCHOOLERS COMPETE IN ROBOT BUILDING
The future engineers competed in robot building. Faculty of Engineering, Izmir University of Economics (IUE) held “Energy-Efficient, Environment-Friendly Robot" competition for high school students. Twenty-two teams of high school students from Izmir, Istanbul, and Afyonkarasihar competed to build robots capable of cleaning up mines, giving commands via brain waves, mowing grass, etc.
Students Ahmet Bulanık, Yücel Müjde, and Emre Doğukan Vurhan from Mazhar Zorlu Vocational and Technical Anadolu High School came in first with their “Süpürteç” titled robotic design, which was intended for sweeping their schoolyard. The team of Salim Üner, Alper Mete Yılmaz, Bora Turan, Emre Er, Tolga Özgü, and Biran Arıkan from Kadıköy Anadolu High School came in second, as Cemal Yiğit Kanat, Bartu Özel, and Ilgın Söğüt from Bornova Anadolu High School came in third at the competition.
Prof. Dr. Yaşar Güneri Şahin, Dean of IUE Faculty of Engineering, indicated that the development of robot technology played a major role in Turkey’s future, and the Dean said, “The competition was held in order to discover the students’ interest in the areas of mechanics, electronics, and software as well as make them gain experience. There were very interesting and successful designs. Their excitement makes us hopeful for our future. There were many different designs including mine cleaning, garbage decomposing, etc. These students are our future, and we want to prepare them for the future in the best way possible”.
