HAPPINESS OF CHILDREN CAPTURED IN PHOTOS
The photographs, taken as part of the project titled, “See like a Kid”, developed by the students of Faculty of Communication, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), captured the happiness of refugee children. IUE communicators, who want to stop negative discourse about refugee children, displayed the photographs of Syrian children taken at various events throughout the year. Over 50 photographs taken by 18 students of IUE Faculty of Communication are being exhibited at Agora Shopping Mall until June 6.
The exhibition consists of photographs taken by students Enginalp Erkısa, Bahadır Tunahan Civan, Alican Cura, Yiğit Kocayol, Yavuz Kaya, Ecem Çelik, Büşra Germir, Şevval Asena Çelik, Duygu Uçkaç, Buğu İrem Kaymakçı, Yasemin Ece Çiçek, Murat Yılmaz, Aytül Öteçelebi, Turuhan Alkır, Emre Ekin, İdil Tuba Salar, Erel Karanfil, and Aytuna Yüken under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Ebru Uzunoğlu, Dean of IUE Faculty of Communication, Faculty Members Assoc. Prof. Dr. Selin Türkel and Aytül Özkan. Refugee children, who attended the exhibition, played hopscotch on the exhibition area. Lions Club supported the event as well as students of Izmir Turk High School who presented story and coloring books to the children.
Enginalp Erkısa, a senior at IUE Department of Public Relations and Advertising, said they had been spending time with the refugee children all year, and their perspectives on refugee children changed a lot. Erkısa, who indicated that they wanted to continue with the project, said, “We participated at various activities with these children where we had a chance to know them well. We understood their yearnings, their wishes better. We played street games, drew pictures with them. We, too, became children again. Seeing children regardless of their religion, language, race, etc. taught us a lot. Therefore, we want to share their excitement with the society, and want them to see these children for who they really are.”
