FEEL CONFIDENT BEFORE YKS!
Almost 2 million 300 thousand candidates will be taking the Higher Education Institutions Exam (YKS) that will be administered on June 30 and July 1. In order to overcome the feelings of stress and excitement, the experts state that students need to stay away from negative and pointless thoughts, and that having self-confidence in their knowledge would bring success.
Songül Yasemin Özgün, Lecturer at Vocational School of Health Services, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), stated that experiencing negative feelings such as anxiety, excitement, panic, and stress excessively would decrease the level of success of the candidates. Özgün said, “Moderate level of exam anxiety affects the success positively. Therefore, instead of getting rid of anxiety completely, one needs to keep it at a level to have positive effect on their performance. There is a very short time until the exam. Instead of studying hard until then, candidates may benefit more from engaging in entertaining activities with their friends, reading books or magazines that interest them. They should also pay attention to maintaining a balanced diet and getting plenty of sleep.”
Özgün, who indicated that the candidates studied hard all year long in order to pass the exam and make their dreams come true, stated that they should maintain their habit of answering questions at the exam as they did when they were getting ready for the exam. Özgün said, “This way, they will not get distracted, and use their time more efficiently. Candidates need to skip the hard questions; they should not spend so much time on them. If they have time left, they can come back and try to answer them again. They should also be very careful when circling the answers on the answer sheet. If possible, they should take the time to circle each answer immediately after solving the question, this way they can prevent possible mistakes when transferring the answers.”
'Tips for the day of the exam'
Candidates should have a light breakfast on the day of the exam, recommended Özgün and said that they should avoid consuming any food that would bother their digestive system. Özgün also recommended that visiting the exam place before the exam day would prevent both being late and it would lessen the anxiety of being late.
