300 KILOS OF GARBAGE COLLECTED BY IUE STUDENTS IN ONE HOUR
Students of Department of Logistics Management, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), did a litter clean up on Inciraltı City Forest grounds as part of the “İzmir’de İyilik Var” (a social responsibility) Project. Students collected 300 kilograms of trash and litter from Inciraltı City Forest in one hour.
IUE Logistics Club, in collaboration with the Turkish Marine Environment Protection Association (TURMEPA) organized a cleanup at Inciraltı City Forest with the participation of 250 students. President of the Club, Ergenekon Doğan Keskin, a junior from Department of Logistics Management, stated that logistics operations usually took place at seas and oceans, and that a unified act was necessary in struggle against pollution. “We wanted to do something for our seas. Sustainability can only be achieved in the field of logistics, as in other fields, by protecting the nature,” said Ergenekon Doğan Keskin. Asst. Prof. Aysu Göçer of IUE Department of Logistics Management, who was overseeing the event, stated that they emphasized the importance of raising awareness of natural and environmental issues in their classes. Asst. Prof. Göçer said, “Leaving a much cleaner and healthier future for next generations is one of the main principles of Department of Logistics Management. Acquiring a consciousness of sustainability contributes greatly to the society and nature.”
Each Year 6.4 Million Tons of Waste End up in the Oceans
Based on the statistics by TURMEPA, 6.4 million tons of trash is dumped in the oceans worldwide each year. If the pollution continues at this rate, by 2050, more plastic waste than fish are expected in seas. It is estimated that 13 thousands of fragments of plastic float per kilometer in the oceans. Each year more than one million birds and 100 thousand mammals die because of debris dumped in the Ocean.
