Students and Trainers of IUE Vocational School of Health Services, Paramedic Program raised awareness about first aid by getting involved in a simulated emergency exercise on campus as part of the Paramedic Services Week. Lecturer Nursun Üstünkarlı, who pointed out the importance of calling 112 as early as possible during emergency, said, “Time is of utmost importance for paramedics. Early notification is very important for paramedics to arrive at the scene as soon as possible. Another point to consider is to share correct information about patients with paramedics. Through guidance of paramedics on the phone, citizens can perform a first-aid that can save the life of the patient until the paramedics arrive.” Üstünkarlı mentioned the latest technology equipment being used at IUE and the internships being performed at 6 hospitals throughout the year. She said, “Experience is very important for a more qualified and practical paramedic service. We try to meet the paramedic services need of our country with our high quality graduates by means of expert academic staff and resources. Our students get a chance to perform their summer internship at 112 stations at 25 different locations in addition to the experience they gain at hospitals.” Üstünkarlı also stated that graduates needed to go through an assessment based on their occupational competencies before they entered business life, in order to take an important step towards social health.
