HIGH SCHOOLERS BECOME ‘COMMUNICATION PROFESSIONALS’
63 students from 10 high schools came together with communication professionals at the 8th “Communication Workshop” organized by Faculty of Communication, Izmir University of Economics (IUE). Students, who attended advertising, media, and creative documentary workshops, got an opportunity to put their theoretical knowledge into practice with their projects.
The 8th “Communication Workshop” brought 63 students from 10 high schools, who are interested in public relations, advertising, media, digital communication, and cinema, together at Izmir University of Economics. “Public Relations and Advertising”, “Media and Communication”, and “Cinema and Digital Media” departments of IUE Faculty of Communication held workshops regarding their fields. Students, who chose to attend the workshops based on their area of interest, received basic theoretical training followed by practical training. At the end of two-day workshop, students presented the ad campaigns, film scenarios, and short documentaries they worked on. Asst. Prof. Zeynep Aksoy, Lecturer at IUE Department of Public Relations and Advertising, pointed that career choices shaped students’ future, and she said, “As students decide about what program they will choose, they choose their professions, and future at the same time. We have been organizing the “Communication Workshop” for eight years so that high school students, who are interested in the field of communication, get a chance to observe these professions up close and gain experience. For example, at Advertising Workshop, students get to see a creative process of an agency. They develop communication strategies and do design. At Media Workshop, they go into the studio and take part in television and radio broadcasting. They get to use cameras, learn about montage, set up lights, and sit at the director’s chair. They learn how special effects are made. At Creative Documentary Workshop, they focus on daily subjects from a different perspective. This way, students get a chance to see and experience the practices in the communication industry up close.”
