Special designs to celebrate the centenary of Bauhaus
Students of Department of Fashion and Textile Design, Faculty of Arts and Design, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), displayed their works that reflect the art, design, and architectural movement initiated by the Bauhaus School. Students’ exhibition, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Bauhaus School, that took place at Ahmed Adnan Saygun Art Center, attracted great attention.
Bauhaus School, which was founded in Weimar, Germany in 1919, marked a major turning point in the development of design and its role in society. It had a strong influence on the artistic styles of its time. With the Bauhaus celebrating its centenary this year, many events are being hosted across the globe to mark the occasion. To celebrate the 100th anniversary of Bauhaus School, students of IUE Department of Fashion and Textile Design, Faculty of Arts and Design (FAAD), created collections and costumes. In her speech, Prof. Dr. Ender Yazgan Bulgun, Dean of IUE FAAD, pointed that art school, during its operation from 1919 to 1933, when it closed under pressure from the Nazi regime, birthed a generation of acclaimed alumni across a range of disciplines. Prof. Dr. Bulgun said, “Influence of Bauhaus Movement can be seen in many branches of art. The school, which specialized in many disciplines including architectural education to city planning, vase designing to textile, wood and metal works to photography and many more, aimed to put an end to the dilemma between art and artisanship. In addition to being an educational institution, Bauhaus School became a platform where production took place and addressed these topics in details.” Prof. Dr. Elvan Özkavruk Adanır, Head of IUE Department of Fashion and Textile Design, said, “Our students, whom are familiar with Bauhaus Movement and its artists since their first year here, got inspired by this Movement and designed their own ready-to-wear collections. Students, who are taking Costume Design Workshop, designed geometric costumes (triangle, circle, and square) inspired by the Triadic Ballet by Oskar Schlemmer.”
The exhibition at Ahmed Adnan Saygun Art Center will stay open until 15 March.
