Students of Departments of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design, Industrial Design, and Yacht Design attended a technical trip to Bodrum İçmeler Region Shipyards, Bodrum Maritime Museum and Bodrum Marina
On 16-17 March 2019, students of Departments of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design, Industrial Design, and Yacht Design, and Elif Büyükkeçeci, Research Asst. from Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design attended a technical trip to Bodrum İçmeler Region Shipyards, Bodrum Maritime Museum, and Bodrum Marina under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Ö. Osman Demirbaş, Asst. Prof. M. Emre Ergül, Asst. Prof. A. Can Özcan, and Asst. Prof. Markus Wilsing.
Throughout the trip, 3 different shipyards with different equipment: Ağanlar, Grandi, and Ada Yacht shipyards were visited. During these visits, students got an opportunity to observe the different stages of manufacturing of sailing boats and motor yacht boats that varied in size and specifications. They also visited the furniture workshops within the shipyards that do custom design for the interiors of the yachts. Students received in depth information about both the manufacturing methods and techniques and the materials used. Third and fourth year Interior Architecture and Environmental Design students, who are taking courses on nautical spaces and design and who want to pursue career in these areas, got a chance to ask about internship and employment to the officials and designers onsite in person. H. Kerem Türkmen, Bülent İ. Turan, and Barışcan Özkalay, whom are graduates of Yacht Design Master’s Program of Graduate School of Social Sciences affiliated to the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, accompanied the team in this technical trip and gave information about their work and answered students’ questions.
Following the shipyards visits on the first day, students first visited Bodrum Maritime Museum on the second day where they received information about the manufacturing of boats unique to the region, their specifications and history. Later on, after visiting the Bodrum Marina and studying the boats in different sizes and characters, the technical trip team returned to Izmir. During these visits, potential university-industry collaborations were also addressed, and plans were made for future meetings to discuss the collaborations in details.
