The “Post-Election Turkish Economy” has been discussed in collaboration with Izmir University of Economics (IUE) and İktisat ve Toplum Dergisi (Journal of Economics and Society). Prof. Dr. Asaf Savaş Akat, Faculty Member of Bilgi University, Prof. Dr. Serdar Sayan, Faculty Member of TOBB Economics and Technology University, Ömer Faruk Çolak, Editor of Journal of Economics and Society, and Prof. Dr. Oğuz Esen, Faculty Member of Izmir University of Economics, attended the event as speakers, which took place on IUE Balçova Campus.
Prof. Dr. Akat, who delivered a speech at the event moderated by Prof. Dr. Ayla Oğuş Binatlı, Faculty Member from IUE Department of Economics, stated that Turkey would be experiencing similar processes it had been experiencing before the local elections. Prof. Dr. Akat said, “They are trying to reinvigorate domestic demand and keep inflation under control at the same time. Do you think the past 8 months would have been any different if there was no election? The answer is no. What you had been seeing before the election, is what you will be seeing post-election.”
Prof. Dr. Serdar Sayan, in his speech, stated that Turkey experienced crises all the time, that while public savings were in question in past crises, private sector debts caught attention this time. While Prof. Dr. Ömer Faruk Çolak indicated that the country needed a more stable economy, Prof. Dr. Oğuz Esen stated that more than one third of public investments in Turkey were made by local administrations, in return, more than 70% of their income were transfers of centralized administration.
