Children’s dreams turned into designs
Children drew about their dream toys, and future designers turned those dreams into reality. Students of Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Izmir University of Economics (IUE) started to work on designing the dream toys of 18 students from Bayraklı 100. Yıl Elementary School as part of the “Toy Design Project”.
Children were asked to draw their dream toys in the project as part of the course named ‘‘IAED 366 Collective Act’’ taught by Asst. Prof. Didem Kan-Kılıç. Students from Departments of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design, Architecture, Industrial Design, Visual Communication Design, and Fashion and Textile Design, who are taking this course turned children’s drawings into three-dimensional designs. Toys will be manufactured at Zürafa Wooden Production Workshop with the sponsorship of Izmir Demir Çelik Sanayi A.Ş. (Iron and Steel Industry Inc.), and given to students as a report card gift.
‘Designs that meet the needs of society’
Asst. Prof. Didem Kan-Kılıç said, “We invited 18 elementary children to our course and asked them to draw their dream toys. Our students helped them with their drawings. Here, we aimed to help develop the relation between designer and person in need, and ensure children get their dream toys as a report card gift. The course aims to prepare a social responsibility project that can help the needs of the society by concentrating the knowledge, experience and capabilities of the designers in the social and collective direction of design. At the same time, it aims to create a sustainable solidarity platform at the university level. The result was wonderful. Designs are ready for their three dimensional manufacturing. We will give the toys they drew as a report gift to the children.”
Kan-Kılıç also indicated that Ali Matay, Lecturer from IUE Department of Cinema and Digital Media, prepared a project book that involves the pictures of toys, their production processes, and three-dimensional final versions. Kan-Kılıç stated that the project exhibition would take place on 20 May at IUE Multi-Purpose Hall where children will be awarded their toys.
