Paper planes filled the skies for Hurkus and his students
Paper planes filled the skies of Izmir University of Economics (IUE) in memory of Vecihi Hürkuş and his first students. The Flying Colors Challenge, a paper plane contest co-organized by Izmir University of Economics Vocational School Civil Aviation Cabin Services, and Civil Aviation Transportation Management Programs, allowed students to design, build, and fly their model paper planes. Students strived to make their paper planes fly the farthest.
Burçin Önder, Director of IUE Vocational School, reminded that in last year’s challenge, the paper planes flew in memory of women aviators. Önder said, “Last year, students flew their paper planes to make a point of expressing how women are actively involved in aviation, as well as in other lines of business. This year’s challenge is dedicated to the first Turkish Civil Aviation School, established on 21 April 1932 by Vecihi Hürkuş, and to first students of the school, 2 females and 10 males. We wanted to cover the skies with colorful paper planes.”
Önder indicated that trainers from the Turkish Aeronautical Association taught students how to make paper planes before the contest, and students flew their paper planes in groups of three. Önder said that students strived to make their paper planes fly the farthest, and the winning group by 7 seconds was Group Mikail.
