Izmir University of Economics (IUE) brought 190 students together by hosting ECOMUN Conference, an event where students conduct debate and decision making, and come up with solution recommendations about current issues worldwide. In addition to students from Turkey, students from other countries such as Canada, Greece, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Liberia attended the 5-day conference. Students worked on the following agenda items identified by 6 different committees: “Basmachi Movement”, ”American Civil War”, “NATO”, “Cabinet of Maduro in Venezuela”, “Organization of Islamic Cooperation”, and “United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime”, and prepared solution recommendation protocols.
The ECOMUN 2019 Conference, held by IUE Model United Nations Club, took place on 22-26 July. High school and university students separated into groups of 30, and worked on the topics identified by the committees. Students got a chance to give a speech in front of people, learn about world policies, improved their foreign language skills, as well as making friends from other countries.
“We will continue to hold conferences”
Gizem İkiz, President of IUE Model United Nations Club, stated that the conference was very beneficial for students, and they would continue to hold such events in the coming years as well. İkiz said, “We hold conferences twice a year in July and December, and bring almost a thousand people together on campus. This year we identified six different committees in order to address current and past world issues, and come up with solution recommendations for these issues. Some of these solution recommendation protocols prepared at the end of the conference, are being submitted to the United Nations.”
