Prospective IUE Physicians Started New Academic Year
Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Faculty of Medicine started 2019 – 2020 Academic Year with its new students. 34 prospective physicians took the stage to swear the “Medical Student Oath” at the White Coat Ceremony of IUE Faculty of Medicine that took place at IUE Conference Hall.
Prof. Dr. Hakan Abacıoğlu, Dean of IUE Faculty of Medicine, academicians, guests, and students’ parents attended the ceremony.
In his speech, Prof. Dr. Hakan Abacıoğlu, Dean of IUE Faculty of Medicine, stated that medical education would last a life time, and in fact the education was the life itself. Prof. Dr. Abacıoğlu indicated that they would stay as medical students until the end of their professional lives.
Pointing out that one million of articles were being published each year in the medical field, Prof. Dr. Abacıoğlu said, “Medical knowledge renews and extends itself continually. Therefore, our students should be able to manage knowledge. Information is a click away. True information would be recognized when it is managed.”
Stating that medicine was both a science and an art at the same time, Prof. Dr. Abacıoğlu said that medical professionals being able to manage the uncertainties regarding humans was in the scope of art. Addressing the students, Prof. Dr. Abacıoğlu said that young physicians should not hesitate to ask for help from their experienced colleagues and that they should not stop questioning.
‘White coat symbolizes purity’
Seher Arı, who delivered a speech on behalf of IUE Faculty of Medicine students, said that the white coat symbolized purity, transparency, and struggle against difficulties, sacrifice, and hope.
Selay Bakan, student who has been placed to the Faculty of Medicine with the highest score in 2019 – 2020 academic year, said that they would work hard to become physicians worthy of their profession, who are respectful to humans and nature, and who never quit learning and researching. Selin Ece Taşbakan, Chair of Turkish Medical Students Association of Faculty of Medicine, Ege University said, “We are the ones who choose faculty of medicine to go forward continuously, to work hard, get tired, and engage in human life directly.”
Doğu İlerler, Co-Chair of IUE European Medical Students Association, who also delivered a speech at the event said that being a medical student at Izmir University of Economics was a privilege, and their goal was to become modern physicians who are committed to ethical and moral values, and are scientifically strong.
