Successful Performance by IUE Sailing Club
Team of academics and students of Izmir University of Economics (IUE) achieved a successful performance in their category at the Arkas Gulf Sailboat Race organized with the participation of approximately 400 athletes and 47 boats as part of the Izmir Gulf Festival. The flybridge named “Goodday Sunshine” came in first place among 6 boats in the competition in which Asst. Prof. Güzden Varinlioğlu, Consultant to the IUE Sailing Club, and Lecturer from IUE Department of Architecture, also participated as a contestant. Asst. Prof. Varinlioğlu’s team was the first team to complete the route early. The boat named “Genç Eayk” came in second place. Team members include IUE student Melis Aydın and representatives from Izmir universities. IUE team of 8 members competed with their boat named “Nanica”. Despite their good performance, the team could not make any rank.
“We will continue to participate in sports activities”
IUE Sports Coordinator Taylan Dündar pointed out the importance of sports in terms of development of students. Stating that they would continue to participate in sailing or other sports activities in the coming days, Dündar said, “We care about our students’ social development through various activities in addition to their academic development. We are aware of the importance of social activities for our students so they can graduate successfully, reach their goals as healthy individuals. In line with that purpose, we strongly encourage them to participate in sports activities. We will be participating in other branches of sports competitions with interested students. We will always take part in such programs.”
