‘Capsule Hotel’ design by future architects
Students of Department of Architecture, Izmir University of Economics (IUE) designed capsule hotel for frequent travelers to help them find accommodations. Students, by basing their designs on human body and its basic movements, focused on how travelers can sleep most comfortably in small bed-sized rooms. Total of 12 groups (6 students per group) worked non-stop for a period of three weeks to implement their designs. IUE students, under the guidance of their faculty, created very unique designs and displayed them on campus for a week. Students, who call themselves, the “Arch201 team”, got full marks from the visitors.
“INSPIRED BY HUMAN BODY”
Assoc. Prof. Güzden Varinlioğlu, Lecturer at IUE Department of Architecture, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, reported that the design study was very important in terms of self-development of students. Assoc. Prof. Varinlioğlu said, “All the work regarding the capsule hotel designs were carried out by the sophomores of department of architecture. They got inspired by the movements of human body. Their designs attracted great attention. People get to travel to different countries everyday due to latest developments in technology and emergence of new lines of businesses. And in doing so, they are racing against time. It has become a necessity to provide spaces that are not so wide that offer a rest and sleep area. Our students based their designs on this very idea.”
“OPPORTUNITY FOR ENTREPRENEURS”
Assoc. Prof. Varinlioğlu, who indicated that they would continue to engage in design studies in different areas throughout the academic year, said, “Design studies that broaden the horizons of our students offer now opportunities to entrepreneurs at the same time. We work hard to make sure that the designs or ideas created by our students are noticed by the relevant persons of the industry. It is very important for our students to develop projects as a team, in addition to receiving theoretical education, and meet with the representatives of the industry before they graduate, and reach their dream goals.”
