Communication workshop for young students
Izmir University of Economics (IUE) and Izmir Provincial Directorate of National Education collaborated to organize a “Communication Workshop” in order to increase the self-expression skills of students aged 7-14, and to contribute to their social development. Academics of IUE Faculty of Communication planned to conduct training under 4 main topics to students as part of the project being carried out for the first time citywide. Students will be receiving training on “Communication Applications”, “Creative Writing Workshop”, “Children’s Philosophy”, and “Media Literacy” at the studios of Faculty of Communication each week.
THEY WILL WRITE STORIES, SHOOT VIDEOS
The project, with the participation of 30 students (in two groups of 15), will continue until January. All students participating in the project have been selected by the Provincial Directorate of National Education. Students, who are studying in different parts of the city and are successful in various fields such as arts, and sports, played a role in the selection process. Once the training is over, students will get a chance to put what they learned into practice, they will be writing stories and shooting videos about their stories. All works of students will be compiled into a report. Creativity of students, who will be benefitting from all the facilities of Campus Izmir, will be improved thanks to this project.
THE PROJECT WILL BE EXPANDED
Assoc. Prof. Gökçen Karanfil, Lecturer at IUE Department of Media and Communication, stated that elementary education students were very happy and excited about getting an opportunity to experience a university environment. Assoc. Prof. Karanfil indicated that the project would be expanded in the upcoming years. “The major goal of this project is to help students broaden their horizons, create awareness on taking responsibility by helping them gain analytical and critical thinking skills. Being a part of such a project makes us happy. Students come to campus on specific days, either with their parents or teachers, and receive training at the studios of Faculty of Communication. After the training is over, they get a chance to tour around the University and chat with university students and ask them questions. This project started as a pilot project with 30 students at Izmir University of Economics. The scope of the project will be expanded in the future. Besides me, Asst. Prof. Ali Özgür Gürsoy, Lecturer Yiğit Bengi, and Specialist Arda Yılmaz take part in conducting the training courses. Students are very excited and happy to be taking part in this project. I believe that, when the project is over, we will have made significant contribution to their awareness on life,” said Assoc. Prof. Karanfil.
