‘Surgical nursing is an art’
Current information on surgical and operating room nursing has been addressed at the “Current Approaches on Surgical and Operating Room Nursing Symposium” co-held by the Department of Nursing, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), Turkish Surgical and Operating Room Nurses Association, and Izmir Katip Çelebi University Ataturk Education and Research Hospital.
The symposium, which was chaired by Prof. Filiz Öğce, Dean of IUE Faculty of Health Sciences and President of Turkish Surgical and Operating Room Nurses Association, attracted great interest with 427 participants consisting of nurses, physicians, academics and students from Izmir and surrounding cities. The participants also observed the February 15th European Perioperative Nursing Day (EPND) at the symposium which aims to give information on providing patients with a better quality and safer care.
In her opening speech, Prof. Filiz Öğce, Dean of IUE Faculty of Health Sciences and President of Turkish Surgical and Operating Room Nurses Association, said, “The theme for this year’s Perioperative Nursing Day is ‘The Art of Preoperative Nursing’. Since Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, said that ‘Nursing was the finest of the Fine Arts’, artistic side of nursing is also appreciated even though its scientific aspect stands out more.”
Prof. Öğce, who pointed that the World Health Organization (WHO) has declared 2020 as the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife, in honor of the bicentenary of the birth of the founder of modern nursing, Florence Nightingale, said that midwives and nurses play a vital role in providing health services. Prof. Öğce said, “It has been reported that 9 million nurses and midwives were needed by 2030 in order to strengthen the universal health. Therefore, the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM), the International Council of Nurses (ICN), and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) all advocate for more investments in nursing and midwifing.”
During the 2-day symposium, while Dilek Çakır Umar introduced the Turkish Surgical and Operating Room Nurses Association, Meryem Yavuz van Giersbergen gave information about the European Perioperative Nursing Day. Presentations on Operation Room Experiences, Minimally Invasive Surgery, Employee Safety, Organ Transplant, Infections, Legal Issues in the Operation Room, and Patient Safety were delivered.
